Helping Rob cope with Tetraplegia

Spinal Injuries Award (SIA) winner

Rob had been nominated for the Inspirational Achievement Award for Young People – for an individual who had shown courage and determination as they rebuilt their life after injury. Rob got down  to the last three and so on 4th June it was off to the  SIA Awards Ceremony and dinner  at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham to to find out the result.

Needless to say we were overjoyed and immensely proud when it came to Rob’s category and he was announced as the winner.

Rob had to go up onto the stage to receive his award and make an impromptu short speech which was pretty impressive in itself. Not only was Rob thrown into the limelight his driving skills were put to the test negotiating the stage and the ramp. There were 18 different award categories for various aspects of  those involved with spinal cord injury, care and research and so there were many other inspirational people there to meet and chat with.

The chance to meet with Double Paralympian and World Cup Medalist Anna Turney started the thoughts between them of creating a Ram Run or Tough Mudder type team event for wheelchair users along the lines of the pony driving championships – obstacles, marathon and cones (leaving out the dressage bit!)
