Why didn't someone tell me I'd beaten my target?

Why didn’t someone tell me I’d beaten my target?

It was great to catch up with JJ as he finished his year long marathon row in support of Rob – having completed a quite staggering 2,046,000 metres – far enough to get him to Madrid if he wasn’t static, staring at a classroom wall where his rowing machine had taken up residency!! When you consider that JJ’s original target was 1,400,000 metres his achievement becomes even more amazing.

February was JJ’s final month and he finished in some style rowing 326,000 metres – his best ever month.

JJ did admit he was getting withdrawal symptoms from not rowing almost every day as he reflected on the last year. He actually rowed on 266 days, averaging over 7.5km each day – it is all right for some having the equivalent of 8 weeks holiday a year!!!!! Every time JJ hit a “wall” he was spurred on thinking of the courage and determination Rob has shown over the last 18 months since his accident.

JJ is very grateful for all the support he has received, particularly his colleagues at Tockington Manor School where JJ is Deputy Head.

Next stop: Rio!

Huge thanks to everyone who has sponsored JJ so far, not to mention to JJ himself for taking on this challenge. JJ’s fundraising page is still open so if you would like to acknowledge his magnificent achievement and support Rob at the same time you can still donate here.

JJ is now entering the last month of his year long challenge in support of Rob with the target to row 1.4 million metres.

I caught up with JJ at the end of January after he had completed a series of personal bests during the month and after smashing his original target.

JJ has completed a staggering 1,720,00 metres – if he had moved he could have gone to Geneva and back!!!

JJ will need a reprint - 1,720,00 and still rowing

In January and obviously trying to burn off the festive excesses JJ’s record month saw him row 261,000 metres, the equivalent of Tockington to Manchester. He followed this up with 2 half marathons (25km each) in the same week, he completed the fastest one  in only 83 minutes and 12 secs. To say JJ is slightly tired and sore might be a bit of an under-statement but apparently nothing a few visits to the physio can’t patch up!!

We are hoping JJ will end his row under the watchful eye of Rob and a row with Ian at the end of the month – diaries permitting.

A massive thank you to JJ and all his supporters for their wonderful support for Rob. If anyone would like to give JJ further support during his final month then please do visit his donation page

It was good to catch up with JJ after the summer holidays as he continues his marathon row.

JJ's Not For Turning!

JJ’s Not For Turning!

After 7 months he has covered 939,000 meters or 584 miles – that would have got him to Paris if his rowing machine moved!!

If Only It Moved I Could Be In Paris

If Only It Moved I Could Be In Paris By Now!

JJ’s commitment to completing this challenge included finding a gym in Canada where he was holidaying over the summer to complete 133,000 metres. The location meant each session on the rowing machine was started and finished with a 6,000 metre cycle ride – and these metres don’t even count towards the challenge!! Refreshed by the Canadian air JJ has just completed a record month in September – 161,000 metres including covering 12,000 metres in one session in under 48 minutes. Plans are afoot for JJ to attempt a half marathon session in the lead up to Christmas so watch this space for more information.

A big thank you to JJ and his supporters for the most generous donations to Cammpaign4Rob. If you would like to help JJ reach his target his donation page can be reached here.

Good luck JJ

“Rob, your tenacity, drive and smile has inspired me to take on this challenge.” – JJSONY DSC

JJ (Mr Jones), a long standing teacher at Tockington Manor School and Rob’s ‘old’ PE and Geography teacher is going to complete 1,400,000 metres on an indoor rowing machine by 1 March 2015. This is a very long way, in fact it is 870 miles!

After 5 months JJ is on schedule having completed 581,000 metres.

We wish JJ good luck with his challenge and if you are able to support his marathon effort please visit his Donation Page.
