CYCLE4ROB – 5 MAY 2014
The Cycle4Rob event was an overwhelming success with 96 cyclists setting out from Dursley RFC with more joining at Thornbury, Chipping Sodbury and Wotton. The sunny weather coupled with the wonderful turnout made for a brilliant atmosphere all around the route with the fastest to complete the full 50 miles doing so in less than 3 hours. Particular praise must go to David Hall who not only completed the full route but did so on a vintage bicycle which was severely lacking in the gear and brake departments. He was spotted at least once having to utilise an up sloping drive to slow down!
The cyclists themselves were only part of what made this event such a success. A massive thank you and well done to the organiser Debbie Hill, who also did a fantastic job designing the route, which took in some of the lovely scenery we are lucky enough to have access to in Gloucestershire. Debbie was brilliantly supported by husband Mike, who amongst other things got up at 4.30am to check all the route signs were still in place before sending the riders off on their way very well briefed, Clare Nichols who coordinated and organised all the marshals and signing in teams and Jenny Grey who organised the catering as well as ensuring the marshals were fed and watered. We are also grateful to Andy Shapland, Chairman at Dursley Road Cycling, whose advice was very much appreciated by Debbie in helping her plan such a great event.
Supporting Debbie were many other volunteers whose involvement was also crucial to the day’s success. Our thanks to the 40 ‘Gamesmakers’ who made the event possible by acting as marshals along the route, manning the pit stops to check all cyclists in and out at each location and generally offering motivating comments to the ever-tiring participants. Also to the First Aiders who gave their time to make sure everyone stayed fit and healthy on the route and to the companies and individuals who sponsored aspects of the event or offered donations. Brian Hamley of BAPS and Simon Bingham of Sema 4 Graphics sponsored the hi-viz vests that the cyclists and marshals wore on the day and the event insurance was sponsored by Tony Cullimore Services Ltd and Teresa Pritchard McTimoney Human and Equine Therapist.
Drinks, home-made cakes and snacks were available along the route provided by many of the helpers and others. Back at Dursley RFC cyclists and spectators were treated to a BBQ, with meat provided by Cam Family Butchers and rolls by Draycott Bakery. Toll House Clinic was on hand to offer recovery massages for the cyclists and Debbie’s son Edd provided some wonderful musical entertainment, all of which made for a great ‘after party’. We also appreciated the support of Dursley, Thornbury, Chipping Sodbury and Wotton Under Edge Rugby Clubs for their assistance, use of their facilities and most importantly opening the bar!
The current total for Cycle4Rob stands at a fantastic £8,988 with individual sponsorships still coming in.
So thank you Debbie for the idea and brilliant organisation, well done to everyone involved and thank you so much for supporting Cammpaign4Rob, your efforts are very much appreciated by Rob and his whole family.

On Monday 5th May Debbie Hill is organising Cycle4Rob.
When Debbie’s bicycle ran into a technical problem on an afternoon cycle she found herself stuck on the side of the road with no way to get home. Luckily for her Rob happened to be cycling on the same road and stopped to help. He fixed her bike’s saddle and Debbie was able to continue her ride. After hearing about Rob’s accident, only 4 days later, Debbie knew exactly what type of fundraising event she wanted to organise – a bike ride.
At Rob’s suggestion this will be a circuit around three local rugby clubs who have offered their support to Debbie. Participants will have the choice of doing the whole circuit taking in Dursley, Chipping Sodbury and Thornbury Rugby Clubs or joining for one or two legs.
We will be posting more details in the coming weeks but in the meantime please contact Debbie (email@example.com) for further information or to sign up for Cycle4Rob.
